"Do you understand that poem, Doctor Wallach?"
"Well, Charles, it certainly is a very personal kind of expression."

Besides being one of the most dynamic bass players, Mingus' compositions rank him as one of the true innovators of jazz music. A highly controverse musician and person with a wide range of different and sometimes contrasting facets. Deeply informed by the traditions, he was always musically ahead of his time, without being part of any avantgarde movement. Always politically thinking, he expressed his opinion and anger in titles such as "Remember Rockefeller At Attica" or "Fables Of Faubus", that in his originally recorded version on "Mingus Presents Mingus" also contained lyrics, that seem to be closer to the later upcoming Punk movement than to anything heard before on a Jazz record. His work includes also writings, ranging from his autobiography "Beneath The Underdog", to open letters, manifestos and almost dadaist texts like his "CAT-alog for toilet training your cat".

Dok Wallach was founded in the late nineties in Berlin, and in 2009 the CD "Live In Lisbon", with recordings made during three days of concerts at Lisbon's famous Hot Clube De Portugal, will be released at the Jazzwerkstatt Label. The project is about getting into the music by playing it, as Steve Lacy did with Monk's music in his school days project. Subtle changes, a new counterline here and there, play with the forms, cut and paste parts of the arrangements, developped over the years. The colorfull and contrasting contents of Mingus' music, with its fast changing moods, between powerfull and almost sentimentally melodic, Mingus described best with his own words, talking about himself in his autobiography "Beneath the Underdog":

"In other words I am three. One man stands forever in the middle, unconcerned, unmoved, watching, waiting to be allowed to express what he sees to the other two.
The second man is like a frightened animal that attacks for fear of being attacked.
Then there's an over-loving gentle person who lets people into the uttermost sacred temple of his being and he'll take insults and be trusting and sign contracts without reading them and get talked down to working cheap or for nothing, and when he realizes what's been done to him he feels like killing and destroying everything around him including himself for being so stupid. But he can't - he goes back inside himself.
Which one is real?
They're all real."

further information
